Are Google Analytics Motion Charts just Eye Candy?

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

The fact is, that it becomes very difficult to trend many metrics (values derived from e.g. segmenting a metric) and or 3 or more dimensions without using techniques like Motion Charts. So I believe it is fair to say that motion charts are indeed very valuable and not just eye-candy - and they can potentially provide insights that one would not spot by shuffling through hundreds of e.g. bar charts.

A reflection on Google, Microsoft and Yahoo Web Analytics Dashboards

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Google, Microsoft and Yahoo Web Analytics Dashboards are, at worst, unfortunately just a report collage – and, at best, an aspiring opportunity for tail users to have an easy ascent towards true Dashboards. Yahoo is proving the best flexibility in what data to show and how to visualize it, but Google provides the best understanding of how to visually communicate quantitative data, where the Microsoft Dashboard lack both data flexibility and understanding of how to visualize it.

Recency Bias in Web Analytics consistently lead to bad decisions and in worst case unfortunate overreactions! Overcome this widespread web analyst error in thought by first and foremost being aware of the bias existing - and install a rule set for critical thinking.

Where’s Dennis? – a comment about Web Analytics in Asia

Monday, July 30th, 2007

I recently returned from a month in Singapore, where I had the opportunity to explore the Asian Web Analytics market (as far as Singapore represent the region, which of course is not a fair representative). This is no Forester or Gartner in depth market analysis; this is my own very subjective comment and view after:

Is Google Analytics really as good as other tools?

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

This is the question Michael Helbling ask over at his excellent Web Analytics Blog – and not a bad question at all. But before voicing my opinion, let’s try to have a look at the fairly straight forward reports Michael ask for:

Keywords Report
Search Engine Report

(the pictures are the ones from Michaels post) [...]
